Summer Research Programs

NOTE: Deadlines vary from December to February — so do your research & apply early!

  • Amgen Scholars (Multiple Sites)

Each summer hundreds of undergraduates step into some of the world’s premier research universities and institutions to participate in the Amgen Scholars Program. Students conduct hands-on research in the lab alongside top faculty, participate in seminars and networking events, and take part in symposia with their peers and leading scientists.

  • Augusta University Summer STAR Program (Georgia)

The Summer STAR (Student Training And Research) Program provides opportunities for highly motivated and talented undergraduate students to develop skills as young scientists and to further explore their interest in biomedical research. STAR participants are matched to a biomedical research laboratory and engage in a research project under the guidance of an Augusta University faculty member and their lab team. The Summer STAR program provides excellent preparation and relevant experience for students planning to pursue a PhD or MD/PhD in the biomedical sciences.

  • Baylor SMART Program (Texas)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Training (SMART) Program provides frontier-level, biomedical summer research projects for undergraduates in a supportive environment with supplemental educational activities.

    The program offers:

    • Nine paid weeks of biomedically related research in a broad range of areas

    • Research and professional development seminars designed for undergraduates

    • Career development activities

    • Designated housing near Baylor College of Medicine

  • Boston University STaRS Program (Massachusetts)

STaRS is a dynamic program that is designed to promote more equitable access to graduate education for students historically underrepresented in science and medicine. STaRS provides scholars with the opportunity to participate in research and enhances the skills required for successful entrance and completion of a graduate program or an MD/PhD program in the biomedical sciences.

Each STaRS participant is assigned a faculty mentor and participates in a biomedical research project from a broad range of topics – including heart, lung and blood research. In addition, the STaRS program includes academic enhancement sessions such as article presentations, research skills seminars and workshops, career path discussions and workshops focused on special topics such as oral and written skills, resume and abstract writing, and applying to a PhD program or an MD/PhD program in the biomedical sciences. Scholars can also enjoy social and cultural activities in Boston!

  • Harvard Summer Research Program in Kidney Medicine (Massachusetts)

The Harvard Summer Research Program in Kidney Medicine (HSRPKM) offers a robust and varied introduction to the world of kidney medicine (nephrology) for undergraduate college students considering a career in science or medicine and particularly suited for students who are interested in pursuing a PhD or MD PhD. The program is an intensive research experience and students are encouraged to become immersed in their project by reading about the focus of the laboratory and participating in meetings and events hosted by the laboratory. Students will be assigned to a laboratory that does research in kidney medicine in one of four research institutions connected to Harvard Medical School: Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Boston’s Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

The program also includes a core curriculum that addresses the basic science and clinical fundamentals of kidney physiology and pathophysiology as well as challenges in the field. In addition, the program features several opportunities put these lessons into action. Students will shadow a nephrologist in clinic and will visit a dialysis unit. Finally, students will learn how to participate in a screening for kidney disease in the community.

  • Cincinnati Children's SURF Program (Ohio)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center offers undergraduates the chance to explore clinical, translational, and basic science research in laboratories in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The primary goal is to provide students with a foundation for making career choices in the biomedical sciences. Students have the opportunity to work with one of more than 700 faculty members at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, many of whom have active research programs that cover all areas of pediatric medicine, including the study of developmental biology, congenital disorders, genetic diseases, cancer, cardiology, neurology and immunology.

The program is 9 or 10 weeks long, depending on the start date. Students are paid a salary of approximately $4,000 (before taxes). Students start the program on either May 27th or May 31st, depending on their availability and the approval of their mentor. In addition to hands-on laboratory experience, students participate in various academic and social activities with students from other summer programs at the University of Cincinnati. The SURF Program includes two scientific writing classes, an ethics in research seminar, an introduction to bioinformatics and a career day. At the end of the summer, students present their research in a poster session, and a lecture is presented by a distinguished keynote speaker.

  • Drexel SURF Program (Pennsylvania)

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies awards nine-week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) to undergraduate students wishing to explore biomedical research careers.

Enhance your analytical and technical scientific research skills while working with and receiving mentoring from College of Medicine faculty in various disciplines.

SURF fellows earn a stipend of $3,000 based on 40 hours' work per week in an assigned laboratory.

***Only students who reside within reasonable commuting distance to Philadelphia will be considered.***

  • GSK SURP Program

The Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, sponsors a ten-week research program for outstanding undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in the biomedical sciences.

Students in the program have the opportunity to:

    • obtain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories

    • interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students

    • attend a weekly luncheon/seminar series of presentations by faculty

    • attend skills development workshops to hone presentation and interview skills

    • attend and present at works-in-progress sessions with the cohort of SURP students

Students who are accepted into the program will be offered a stipend of $6,000 and housing. Housing accommodations are available in proximity to the school for the duration of the summer program. All students deliver research presentations at a poster session at the end of the program, and four exceptional students will be named Rubin and Sarah Shaps Scholars at the end of the program.
